In 2009, Bunge was released from an obligation of approximately $7 million recorded as part of the purchase accounting for edible oil products assets acquired in 2008. The release from this obligation was recorded in 2009 as a reduction of goodwill in the edible oil products segment.

Bunge's Brazilian subsidiary's tax deductible goodwill is in excess of its book goodwill. For financial reporting purposes, the tax benefits attributable to the excess tax goodwill are first used to reduce associated goodwill and then other intangible assets to zero, prior to recognizing any income tax benefit in the consolidated statements of income.
