Für den Inhalt der Mitteilung ist allein der Emittent verantwortlich. —————————————————————————— ELMOS steigt ins MEMS-Sensorgeschäft ein Die ELMOS Semiconductor AG in Dortmund (Neuer Markt: ELG) hat heute bekanntgeben, ein Vertrag zur Akquisition der Firma Silicon Microstructures (SMI) Inc., Fremont, Californien, mit der OSI Systems Inc., Hawthorne, Californien (Nasdaq:OSIS) unterzeichnet zu haben. Die Transaktion soll Ende März wirksam werden, die Kaufsumme beträgt rund 6,5 Mio. US$. Nach dem Erwerb der Eurasem, wodurch ein hausintern fehlendes Glied im Bereich des Chipassembly geschlossen wurde, und der kürzlich angekündigten Kooperation mit Motorola, die den Zugang zu den im Automobil weit verbreiteten Mikrocontroller- Architekturen ermöglicht, stellt der Erwerb von SMI den nächsten strategischen Schritt in Richtung Systemlösungen für das automobile Geschäft dar. Der Kauf von SMI ermöglicht dem ELMOS-Konzern, seinen Kunden im Automobilbereich sowie für andere Anwendungen intelligente Sensorlösungen auf Silizium anzubieten. Derartige Lösungen können sowohl aus einer Kombination aus mikromechanischem Sensorelement (MEMS) plus ASIC als auch in einer vollintegrierten Variante bestehen. ELMOS erweitert damit seine Möglichkeiten zur kundenspezifischen Systemintegration mit intelligenten vor-Ort Sensorsystemen. Die Akquisition ebnet der ELMOS-Gruppe den Weg für Lösungen im Mechatronikbereich – Schlüsselelementen im Automobil der Zukunft. SMI ist im Sensorgeschäft gut etabliert und zählt zu den Marktführern im Bereich der hochpräzisen Drucksensortechnologie in Silizium. Bisher werden SMI- Produkte vor allem im Automobil eingesetzt, z.B. zur Abgas- und Motorsteuerung, in Bremssystemen, aber auch in medizinischen Atemgeräten und Kathetern sowie industriellen Heizungs- und Belüftungssystemen. Im Geschäftsjahr 2000/2001 wird SMI mit rund 45 Mitarbeitern einen Umsatz von über 6 Mio. US$ erzielen. The transaction is scheduled to be closed at the end of March with a total payment of about US$ 6.5 million. After purchasing Eurasem, which closed the missing link of in-house assembly, and the recently announced co- operation with Motorola, which offers access to automotive microcontrollers, the acquisition of SMI is the next strategic step to offer systems solutions for the automotive business. This acquisition enables the ELMOS Group to provide advanced silicon-based smart sensor solutions for its automotive customers and other application areas. These sensor solutions can either be made up of a combination of a sensor element plus an ASIC or as a fully integrated version. ELMOS enlarges its dedicated ‘Systems Integration’ approach by ‘smart’ sensor systems operating at the point of use. The acquisition well prepares ELMOS for mechatronic solutions – which will be one of the key elements in the automotive future. SMI is well established in the sensor business and one of the leaders in the field of precision silicon pressure sensor technology. Up to now, the products of SMI are used primarily in automotive applications such as emission and engine control, for braking systems as well as in medical respiration and catheter systems and industrial systems for heating and ventilation.
