ELMOS: Expansion of the MEMS Fabrication of Subsidiary SMI, Inc. Silicon Microstructures, Inc. (SMI), USA, a subsidiary of ELMOS Semiconductor AG (FSE:ELG), Germany, has entered into an agreement to purchase the Milpitas MEMS manufacturing and R&D operations of the IC Sensor Division of Measurement Specialties, Inc. (AMEX:MSS), USA. The purchase price will be USD 5.225 million, with the first USD 3.35 million in cash at the closing of the transaction and USD 1.85 million in prepaid credit for products and services. Closing is expected on about August 1st, 2002. As a result, SMI will have all of the manufacturing capability and processes required to design, develop and fabricate advanced bulk and surface micromachined products (i.e accelerometers and gyroscopes). SMI will enter into an agreement to supply wafers and wafer development services to IC Sensors, which guarantees additional base-load to achieve an efficient use of the fab capacity. The purchase of the IC Sensor’s wafer operation is in line with ELMOS’ strategy to grow SMI’s capabilities as a leading MEMS company.
