Jenoptik Group sales up 11.8 percent in the first quarter of 2002.
The Jenoptik Group achieved sales of 253.0m euros over the first three months of
the fiscal year. This was a sales increase of 11.8% from the previous first
quarter (2001: 226.2m euros). This increase resulted solely from Clean Systems
business division sales. Although the Clean Systems business division achieved
sales of more than one billion euros in the fourth quarter of 2001 and the first
quarter of 2002, the Jenoptik Group’s order backlog has nearly remained at last
year’s first-quarter level, falling 8% to 2 billion euros. The Jenoptik Group
was not fully able to match its high order intake total of the previous first
quarter, with order intake falling 9.5% to 549.9m euros. The net income and the
group operating income were strongly influenced by extraordinary items over the
first quarter of 2001. This included a non-recurring contribution to operating
income from the sale of MicroLas GmbH to Lambda Physik AG. This other operating
income and the income from the sale of all CyBio shares held by DEWB AG led to
an unusually high level of operating income and group net income for that period
last year. Group operating income in the first quarter of 2002 amounted to 4.3m
euros (2001: 48.1m euros). The group’s net income was also negative at 7.6m
euros (2001: 39.9m euros).
Following the first quarter of 2002, the Jenoptik Group is continuing to hold
fast to the goals. After two successful fiscal years in 2000 and 2001, both with
sales increases of more than 25% each, Jenoptik anticipates sales figures in
2002 to remain approximately at the level of 2001. Net income excluding
extraordinary items – is expected to fall slightly below last year’s figures,
provided that all projects are completed in time to meet deadlines and to be
included into accounts by December 2002. The Clean Systems business division
orders accounted for in 2002 will have only narrow profit margins due to strong
price competition.
