Jenoptik Group expands its optics line to include plastics technology.
JENOPTIK AG acquires all shares in Wahl Optoparts GmbH.
The Jenoptik technology group has boosted the optics line of its Photonics
business division, acquiring 100 percent of shares in Wahl Optoparts GmbH as of
December 31, 2003. The company based in the German town of Triptis (Thuringia)
specializes in the development, production and distribution of custom-made
optical components, as well as plastic optomechanical and optoelectronic
component assemblies.
By acquiring Wahl Optoparts, the Jenoptik Group has entered into a new high-
growth field of technology in the Photonics business division. The use of
plastic optics in optical equipment and systems will figure prominently in the
future of optical technologies.
Wahl Optoparts is a European leader in plastic optics. The company manufactures
its lenses, prisms, microlenses and its microstructured optical components
through the use of injection molding. In only a short period of time, the
middle-sized company with 174 employees has developed into one of the leading
suppliers of plastic optics in Europe, reaching 19.5m euros in sales in 2002.
Wahl Optoparts supplies renowned customers such as Roche Diagnostics, Sanmina-
SCI, Logitech and Bosch, and is well positioned in the high-growth medical
technology, life science and industrial sensor markets.
By acquiring Wahl Optoparts, Jenoptik will be expanding its optics product
range. Wahl Optoparts will benefit from the expertise offered by Jenoptik’s
Photonics business division, including optical design, optical measuring
technology and coating technology, as well as hot-stamping technology.
The company’s plastics expertise will also offer further broad technological
advantages for Jenoptik’s Photonics business division. Combining this with
Jenoptik’s competence in the area of sensors will allow to address the
automotive and life-science industries more intensively, while laser-driven
plastics processing represents another field with strong cooperative potential.
