In spite of an increasing problematic economic environment MEDION has maintained
its growth path. In the first nine months of 2001 sales went up by 38 % from
EUR 737.1 M to EUR 1,016.9 M against the previous year. Simultaneously EBIT rose
by 45 % from EUR 39.2 M to EUR 56.7 M and net earnings were boosted by 63 %
from EUR 20.5 M to EUR 33.4 M, supported by the effects of the German tax
reform. Earnings per share climbed by EUR 0.26 from EUR 0.43 to EUR 0.69.

% of total sales (previous year: 75 %). Entertainment and Household Electronics
contributed EUR 244.1 M (or 24 %) to total sales (2000: 21 %). In Communications
Technology sales reached EUR 38.1 M or 4 % of MEDION’s overall sales (2000: 4
%). With regards to the third quarter alone, sales went up by 34 % from EUR
147.9 M to EUR 198.1 M, compared to the equivalent period in 2000. The quarterly
net profit rose well above 41 % from EUR 5.0 M to EUR 7.1 M. Earnings per share
could be raised from EUR 0.11 to EUR 0.15.
Successful expansion of international business
In the first nine months of 2001 sales abroad rose by more than 50 % from EUR
143.8 M to EUR 220.0 M, thus covering 21.6 % of total sales (2000: 19.5 %).
These figures acknowledge that MEDION is on track to reach the goal of a
turnover abroad of 25 % of total sales by 2002.
Outlook
Given the increasing difficult economic environment, MEDION’s solid performance
is encouraging in the third quarter of 2001. We therefore remain very confident
about further development. We believe that in the market in which we are
operating, due to our excellent competitive position, there is enormous
potential for growth which can be characterized by the following facts and
trends:
.the digitalization of products in consumer electronics
.the ongoing process of convergence of multimedia and consumer electronics
.the trend towards mobile computing
.the expansion of international business
.the expansion of strategic partnerships and cooperations
For this reason we are convinced we will be able to completely fulfil our growth
forecasts.
