On October 25, Boliden, together with the global mining and metals organization
ICMM and the learning and development organization BecomingX, will organize the
world's deepest marathon in the Garpenberg zinc mine. The race, which will be
run 1,120 meters below sea level, is being carried out with the goal of raising
1 million USD for charity.
"We're incredibly proud to host this historic event at our Garpenberg mine. As
one of the safest and most technologically advanced mines in the world, it's the
perfect setting to show that mining can be both cutting-edge and purpose-driven.
We look forward to welcoming the intreprid runners and shining a light on an
industry that's critical to a sustainable future.", says Mikael Staffas,
President and CEO Boliden.
In parallel with the continuation of regular operations, approximately 60
participants will run a distance of a total of 42.195 km, which will be
partially illuminated. The participants, who are representatives from the mining
and metals industry and civil society, come from at least 15 different countries
and all have good running experience. Boliden has, through an internal
procedure, given the opportunity for employees from all units of the group to
participate. However, the public cannot participate in the event due to space
reasons.
In connection with the marathon, the ambition is that two world records will be
registered by Guinness World of Records. First, a new world record will be set
for the world's deepest marathon and secondly, a world record will be set for
organizing the same.
