On September 20, 2016, our Board of Directors approved a share repurchase program authorizing up to $40.0 billion in share repurchases. This share repurchase program commenced on December 22, 2016, has no expiration date, and may be suspended or discontinued at any time without notice. As of September 30, 2019, $7.4 billion remained of this $40.0 billion share repurchase program.

On September 18, 2019, our Board of Directors approved a share repurchase program authorizing up to $40.0 billion in share repurchases. This share repurchase program will commence following completion of the program approved on September 20, 2016, has no expiration date, and may be terminated at any time.

The shares repurchased were under the share repurchase program approved on September 20, 2016. The above table excludes shares repurchased to settle employee tax withholding related to the vesting of stock awards of $967 million and $1.1 billion for the first quarter of fiscal years 2020 and 2019, respectively. All repurchases were made using cash resources.
