Options to purchase 1.7 million and 4.5 million shares of common stock were outstanding at September 30, 2017 and 2016, respectively, but were not included in the computation of the dilutive effect of stock options for the three-month periods then ended. Options to purchase 1.2 million and 5.8 million shares of common stock were outstanding at September 30, 2017 and 2016, respectively, but were not included in the computation of the dilutive effect of stock options for the nine-month periods then ended. These stock options were excluded from the computation because the options’ exercise prices were greater than the average market price of our common shares during the respective period, and therefore, would be anti-dilutive to earnings per share under the treasury stock method.
