As of December 31, 2011 and 2010, the net carrying value of temporarily idled smelting assets was $166 and $306, representing 353 kmt and 587 kmt of idle capacity, respectively. Additionally, the net carrying value of permanently idled smelting assets, representing 291 kmt, was written off at the end of 2011 (see Note D). At December 31, 2010, the net carrying value of these now permanently idled smelting assets was $152. Also, the net carrying value of temporarily idled refining assets was $65 and $100 as of December 31, 2011 and 2010, representing 1,177 and 1,321 kmt of idle capacity, respectively.
