INCOME TAXES

Our effective income tax rate was 14.5% for the three months ended September 30, 2018, as compared to 23.4% for the three months ended September 30, 2017, and 16.9% for the nine months ended September 30, 2018, as compared to 22.8% for the nine months ended September 30, 2017. The decrease in our effective tax rate for each period, as compared to the same periods in the prior year, was primarily related to the reduction in our U.S. statutory tax rate as a result of the 2017 Tax Act and tax benefits related to share-based compensation.

We have accounted for the impacts of the 2017 Tax Act as of December 31, 2017, to the extent a reasonable estimate could be made, and we recognized provisional amounts related to the deemed repatriation tax, offset by the remeasurement of our deferred tax assets and liabilities to record the effects of the tax law change in the period of enactment. This treatment is provided for in ASU 2018-05, which allows a company to record a provisional amount when it does not have the necessary information available, prepared, or analyzed in reasonable detail to complete its accounting for the change in the tax law during the measurement period. The measurement period ends when the company has obtained, prepared, and analyzed the information necessary to finalize its accounting, but cannot extend beyond one year. During the first nine months of 2018, the Internal Revenue Service issued additional guidance providing clarification on certain aspects of the deemed repatriation tax calculation. The additional guidance did not result in any measurement period adjustments to the provisional amounts recorded as of December 31, 2017. We will continue to monitor for new guidance related to provisional amounts recorded.
