The cost of reinsurance ceded totaled $54.2 million and $63.6 million in the second quarters of 2021 and 2020, respectively, and $109.0 million and $125.8 million in the first six months of 2021 and 2020, respectively.  We deduct this cost from insurance policy income.  Reinsurance recoveries netted against insurance policy benefits totaled $64.1 million and $36.2 million in the second quarters of 2021 and 2020, respectively, and $156.4 million and $142.2 million in the first six months of 2021 and 2020, respectively.

From time to time, we assume insurance from other companies.  Any costs associated with the assumption of insurance are amortized consistent with the method used to amortize deferred acquisition costs.  Reinsurance premiums assumed totaled $5.0 million and $5.8 million in the second quarters of 2021 and 2020, respectively, and $10.3 million and $11.8 million in the first six months of 2021 and 2020, respectively. Insurance policy benefits related to reinsurance assumed totaled $6.7 million and $7.2 million in the second quarters of 2021 and 2020, respectively, and $15.3 million and $15.6 million in the first six months of 2021 and 2020, respectively.
