Goodwill and Intangible Assets

Goodwill represents the excess of the purchase price and related costs over the fair value of the net tangible and intangible assets of businesses acquired.

At December 31, 2013, intangible assets represent the values assigned to trade names and trademarks and customer relationships. At December 31, 2012, intangible assets represent the values assigned to trade names and trademarks. The trade names and trademarks have indefinite lives and are not amortized. The customer relationships, which were acquired through the acquisition of Wood Resources LLC Southeast Operations on September 30, 2013, are amortized over 15 years. Amortization expense is expected to be approximately $0.1 million per year for the next 15 years.
