NEW ACCOUNTING STANDARDS
Accounting Standards Issued But Not Yet Adopted
In February 2018, the Financial Accounting Standards Board ("FASB"), issued Accounting Standards Update ("ASU") No. 2018-02, Income Statement - Reporting Comprehensive Income (Topic 220), to address the impact of the U.S. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (the "Tax Act") on tax effects presented in other comprehensive income. The amended guidance allows a reclassification from accumulated other comprehensive income to retained earnings for the tax effects of items within accumulated other comprehensive income resulting from the Tax Act. The amended guidance is effective for fiscal years, and interim periods within those years, beginning after December 15, 2018. Early adoption is permitted, including adoption in any interim period for which financial statements have not yet been issued. The amendments may be applied either in the period of adoption or retrospectively to each period in which the effect of the change in the U.S. federal corporate income tax rate in the Tax Act is recognized. We are currently evaluating the impact of the adoption of this standard on our consolidated financial statements.
In March 2017, the FASB issued ASU No. 2017-07, Compensation - Retirement Benefits (Topic 715), to improve the presentation of net periodic pension cost and net periodic post-retirement benefit cost. The amended guidance requires that an employer disaggregate the service cost component from the other components of net benefit cost, provides explicit guidance on how to present the service cost component and the other components of net benefit cost in the income statement, and allows only the service cost component of net benefit cost to be eligible for capitalization. The amended guidance is effective for fiscal years, and interim periods within those years, beginning after December 15, 2017. We plan to apply the amended guidance beginning in Q1 2019 using the practical expedient which allows entities to use information previously disclosed in their pension and other postretirement benefit plans note as the estimation basis to apply the retrospective presentation requirements. We expect to reclassify approximately $1 of net expenses for 2018 and $2 of net credits for 2017 from Cost of sales and Operating expenses to Other income, net on our Consolidated Statements of Income. There will be no impact to Net income on our Consolidated Statements of Income as a result of this change.
In June 2016, the FASB issued ASU No. 2016-13, Financial Instruments - Credit Losses (Topic 326), which replaces the incurred loss impairment methodology in current U.S. GAAP with a methodology that reflects expected credit losses. The amended guidance is effective for fiscal years, and interim periods within those years, beginning after December 15, 2019, with early adoption permitted for the fiscal years, and interim periods within those fiscal years, beginning after December 15, 2018. We are currently evaluating the impact of the adoption of this standard on our consolidated financial statements.
In February 2016, the FASB issued ASU No. 2016-02, Leases (Topic 842), which establishes a new lease accounting model for lessees. The updated guidance requires an entity to recognize assets and liabilities arising from financing and operating leases, along with additional qualitative and quantitative disclosures. The amended guidance is effective for fiscal years, and interim periods within those years, beginning after December 15, 2018, with early adoption permitted. We expect the adoption of this guidance will result in an increase in assets and liabilities on our Consolidated Balance Sheets, and we are currently evaluating the extent of this increase.
In May 2014, the FASB issued ASU No. 2014-09, Revenue From Contracts with Customers (Topic 606), which establishes a new standard on revenue recognition. The new standard (along with its related clarifying amendments) outlines a single comprehensive model for entities to use in accounting for revenue arising from contracts with customers and supersedes most current revenue recognition guidance, including industry-specific guidance. The core principle of the revenue model is that an entity should recognize revenue to depict the transfer of promised goods or services to customers in an amount that reflects the consideration to which the entity expects to be entitled in exchange for those goods or services. The standard is designed to create greater comparability for financial statement users across industries and jurisdictions and also requires enhanced disclosures. The guidance is effective for fiscal years, and interim periods within those years, beginning after December 15, 2017, with early adoption permitted for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2016. We have evaluated the impact that will result from adoption of the new standard, and based on analysis performed as of February 23, 2018, we do not anticipate a significant impact on our consolidated financial statements except for enhanced disclosures. We currently plan to apply the new standard using the modified retrospective method in Q1 2019.
