8. Inventories and Deferred Preservation Costs

Inventories at December 31, 2018 and 2017 are comprised of the following (in thousands):

We maintain consignment inventory of our On-X heart valves at domestic hospital locations and On-X heart valves and JOTEC products at international hospital locations to facilitate usage. We retain title to this consignment inventory until the device is implanted, at which time we invoice the hospital. As of December 31, 2018 we had $11.2 million in consignment inventory, with approximately 55% in domestic locations and 45% in foreign locations. As of December 31, 2017 we had $9.3 million in consignment inventory, with approximately 58% in domestic locations and 42% in foreign locations.
