Research and Development Costs	16. Research and Development Costs Expenditures for research and development are charged to expense as incurred and totaled $18.6 million and $57.9 million, respectively, for the three and nine month periods ended September 30, 2017, and $11.8 million and $34.5 million, respectively, for the prior year periods. Research and development costs are reported as a component of engineering, design and development expenses in our unaudited condensed consolidated statements of operations.
