Note 16. Income Taxes

The effective tax rate was 29.8% for the three months ended March 31, 2019 and 30.1% for the three months ended March 31, 2018.

The income tax provision was computed based on our estimated annualized effective tax rate and the full-year forecasted income plus the tax impact of any unusual, infrequent, or nonrecurring items during the period. The effective tax rate for the three months ended March 31, 2019 was greater than the federal statutory rate of 21% primarily due to foreign income taxed at higher rates, equity compensation vesting during the quarter, and the tax benefit of a legal settlement that was treated as an unusual item and not included in the annualized tax rate calculation. The effective tax rate for the three months ended March 31, 2018 was greater than the federal statutory rate primarily due to foreign income tax at higher rates and the impact of U.S. tax reform.

Cash paid for income taxes was $3.4 million for the three months ended March 31, 2019 and $9.1 million for the three months ended March 31, 2018.
