Note 3. ASSETS HELD FOR SALE

We have classified 11 sites and 25 sites as held for sale at September 30, 2021 and December 31, 2020, respectively, which are expected to be sold within one year of such classification. Assets held for sale were as follows (in thousands):

The Partnership has continued to focus on divesting lower performing assets. During the three and nine months ended September 30, 2021, we sold 14 and 23 properties for $4.9 million and $8.8 million in proceeds, resulting in net gains of $0.4 million and $1.5 million, respectively. During the three and nine months ended September 30, 2020, we sold seven and 20 properties for $3.8 million and $13.3 million of proceeds, resulting in net gains of $2.2 million and $4.0 million, respectively.
