Income Taxes Income Taxes The effective tax rate was 19.3% and 19.8% for the three and nine month periods ended September 30, 2023, respectively, and 19.2% and 19.3% for the three and nine month periods September 30, 2022, respectively. The effective tax rate for all periods differs from the statutory rate of 21% primarily due to the tax-exempt interest received from municipal bonds and bank-owned life insurance, among other factors. The increase in the effective tax rate for the nine month period ended September 30, 2023 as compared to the same period of 2022 is primarily a result of lower tax-exempt income.
