Operating Lease Assets
The following table presents the carry value of operating lease assets in the Company's consolidated balance sheets as of December 31, 2021 and 2020 (in thousands):

Operating lease asset additions are offset by a corresponding increase to operating lease liabilities and do not impact the consolidated statement of cash flows at commencement. The non-cash effect of operating lease additions in 2020 and 2019 totaled $1.9 million and $53.7 million (inclusive of $47.7 million recognized in 2019 upon adoption of the revised lease accounting guidance), respectively.
The following table provides details regarding the components of operating lease expense based on the initial term of underlying agreements for the years ended December 31, 2021, 2020 and 2019 (in thousands):

During 2020, the Downhole Technologies segment closed certain lease facilities in connection with restructuring activities and recognized a non-cash impairment charge of $2.0 million to reduce the carrying value of the related operating lease assets to their estimated realizable value.
During 2021, the Well Site Services segment recognized non-cash operating lease asset impairment charges of $2.8 million associated with the closure of certain leased facilities. During 2021, the segment also recorded an additional $1.9 million charge for other expenses associated with the exit of a leased facility.
