RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG, Bad Neustadt a.d. Saale
– Take-over of Johanniter-Krankenhaus Dohna-Heidenau
– Purchase contract signed on 22 November 2002
Bad Neustadt a.d. Saale, 24 November 2002 ——— On Friday, 22 November 2002,
the fourth round of negotiations about the acquisition of Johanniter-
Krankenhaus Dohna-Heidenau by RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG closed successfully with the
signature of the purchase contract before a notary. The partners to contract
agreed to maintain secrecy with regard to the purchase price. Previously,
between 1998 and 2001, the District of Sächsische Schweiz had been in
negotiations with the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem (Johanniter) on a joint
venture for the new construction of a hospital, but the talks failed. The take-
over now agreed will become effective on 1 January 2003. The newcomer to RHÖN-
KLINIKUMs hospital portfolio operates at present 142 beds under the hospital
plan of the Free State of Saxony (of which 60 internal medicine, 50 general
surgery and 32 urological services).
This take-over brings RHÖN-KLINIKUMs assets to two hospital on the left of the
river Elbe in the District of Sächsische Schweiz, namely the former district
hospital in Pirna and the so far Johanniter-Krankenhaus in Dohna-Heidenau – both
will in future be privately owned and operated by RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG.
Following the District Councils decision in favour of the sale of the former
district hospital in Pirna (342 beds) to RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG, that hospital was
taken over effective 1 October 2002, in accordance with the purchase contract
signed on 7 August 2002, which was approved by the District Council on 16
September 2002.
With the acquisition of Johanniter-Krankenhaus Dohna-Heidenau, RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG
will now be able to proceed with the optimisation of hospital care provision in
the Sächsische Schweiz district areas on the left of the Elbe. It is planned to
amalgamate the two sites and build a new hospital, which is what the State
Ministry for Social Affairs has long strived to achieve.
This step will enable high-quality hospital services for all patients in the
region and economic provision of services, which Klinikum Dohna-Heidenau would
not have been able to achieve on its own in the light of the challenges coming
up with the introduction of DRGs (diagnosis-related lump-sum remuneration for
hospital services).
