IDEX joins the FIDO Alliance to create secure standards for strong
authentication
IDEX joins forces with major industry players to ensure interoperability
standards and improve user convenience.
Oslo, Norway, 22 October 2013: IDEX ASA joins the Fast IDentity Online (FIDO)
Alliance. IDEX will be a Sponsor member and participate in the definition of
protocol standards for secure authentication.
"Being a Sponsor member of the FIDO Alliance provides us an ideal opportunity to
collaborate with the major industry leaders who are now defining protocol
standards for secure user verification. Biometrics, such as fingerprint sensors
and other multifactor authentication methods, play a key role in the FIDO
framework, which will extend strong authentication to mobile devices and
applications to effect a simpler, more secure and private user experience," said
Dr. Hemant Mardia, CEO of IDEX.
The FIDO Alliance focuses the industry cooperatively on delivering standard
protocols for secure authentication. Established in 2012, The FIDO Alliance
seeks to remedy the lack of interoperability among strong authentication
solutions, from devices to Relying Party (RP) server-side management and risk
controls. FIDO also seeks to solve the problems that users face with creating
and remembering multiple usernames and passwords. This effort is being driven
and has support at the Board level by industry leaders, such as Google,
MasterCard, Lenovo and PayPal.
"The FIDO Alliance welcomes our newest sponsor member IDEX as a strong global
collaborator and innovator in mobile authentication," said Michael Barrett,
president of the FIDO Alliance. "IDEX has a unique cross-licensing capacitive
fingerprint sensor agreement with Apple and works closely with our sponsor
FingerQ's parent, World Wide Touch Technology. We continue to seek and enlarge
our global membership with organizations like IDEX that are capable, connected
and determined to deliver better authentication that is more secure, private,
and easier to use."
Consumers are demonstrating interest in and demand for strong authentication
methods that are affordable and easy to use, especially in mobile devices and
mobility applications. Last month, Apple released its Touch ID technology in its
new iPhone 5S. "Smartphone vendors other than Apple hold more than eighty-five
per cent of the market, and IDEX is one of three principal suppliers positioned
to serve that market," added Dr. Mardia.
"Standardization will further accelerate the market growth. We look forward to
sharing our expertise and associating our fingerprint technology with standards
that ensure simple and secure user verification," said Øyvind Sløgedal, VP of
Business Development at IDEX.

About the FIDO Alliance
The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance, www.fidoalliance.org, was formed in
July 2012 to address the lack of interoperability among strong authentication
technologies, and remedy the problems users face with creating and remembering
multiple usernames and passwords. The Alliance plans to change the nature of
authentication by developing standards-based specifications for better
authentication that define an open, scalable, interoperable set of mechanisms
that reduce reliance on passwords. Better authentication is stronger, private,
and easier to use when authenticating to online services.
