IDEX opens development centre in Boston
Oslo, Norway, 23 October 2013: IDEX opens its second US location, a development
centre in metropolitan Boston, Massachusetts. Recently, IDEX opened an office in
Silicon Valley.
Key members of the Boston team will be Fred Benkley, CTO of IDEX America Inc.,
and David Geoffroy, Director of Engineering at IDEX America Inc. Previously,
Messrs. Benkley and Geoffroy were senior technical managers at PicoField
Technologies, Inc. IDEX acquired technology and hired staff from PicoField on
23 September 2013.
Benkley and Geoffroy were the two founders of US fingerprint sensor company
Validity Sensors, Inc., where they held senior technical positions.
"Opening our Boston metropolitan office enables our experienced US technology
team along with IDEX ASA to expand the patent portfolio, implement next
generation fingerprint sensor products more rapidly, tap into the local talent
base, and strengthen our global presence in the mobile market," said Benkley.
The development centre is the major technical department of IDEX America, and
will form an integral part of IDEX's technical development activities in
addition to those at the group's head office in Norway. Thar Casey, also
formerly with PicoField, will be President of IDEX America, located at IDEX
America's office in Silicon Valley. The IDEX America staff will be expanded to
serve customers and partners.
"The Boston and Silicon Valley sites are important as IDEX leverages on the
strong interest in fingerprint technology, which was boosted by Apple's recent
release of its Touch ID technology in the iPhone 5S," said Dr. Hemant Mardia,
CEO of IDEX. "This market has significant momentum, and IDEX now has a solid
presence in the United States," he added.
The fingerprint sensor market is expected to show rapid growth as the other
smartphone vendors follow in Apple's path.
"IDEX is one of only three principal suppliers with established low cost
fingerprint sensor technology designed to serve the 85 per cent smartphone
market share outside Apple. We are confident that our current and future swipe
and touch sensor products will be highly competitive and successful in the
market," Dr. Mardia commented. "We have a strong technology and patent
portfolio. The SmartFinger sensor is competitively priced. It is secure, low
profile and delivers superior biometric performance."
