NEXT Biometrics supports Evolute’s Aadhaar L1 Certification for Indian market expansion

Evolute, a leading manufacturer of Point-of-Sale (POS) devices for the banking and finance industry, has achieved Aadhaar L1 Certification, supported by NEXT Biometrics, a world leader in advanced, high-security fingerprint sensor technology.

The certification enables Evolute to connect its devices into Aadhaar, the world’s largest biometric identification system, with over 1.4 billion residents currently enrolled. It provides a single, verifiable digital ID to citizens in India, enabling access to benefits including government welfare, subsidies and more. L1 certification is mandatory for all manufacturers using the system, to ensure high levels of accuracy, performance and security when identifying and authenticating users.

NEXT supported Evolute in successfully completing the rigorous certification process, demonstrating exceptional in-field performance and security. Following certification, Evolute is well positioned to expand further into India’s market for digital identity and financial inclusion. NEXT estimates that this market is set for rapid growth, with roughly 4.5 million L0 certified devices needing to be replaced by L1 certified devices in the coming years. This news marks the next stage in a NOK 14 – 28 million multi-year commercial partnership for NEXT’s FAP 20 sensors that commenced in 2023.

“By integrating NEXT’s advanced biometric sensors with Evolute’s proven engineering prowess, and achieving L1 certification, we are setting a new benchmark of trust for secure and inclusive citizen services. This collaboration reflects how Evolute’s deep product engineering expertise, combined with NEXT’s technological rigor, creates a formidable partnership capable of accelerating innovation for India and the world at scale.” — Parag Mehta, CEO, Evolute.

By supporting Evolute, NEXT becomes the only fingerprint sensor provider to have supported two Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) through the L1 Certification process using its Active Thermal® FAP 20 ‘Basalt’ fingerprint sensor. NEXT’s Active Thermal technology uses heat from the finger and 3D imaging to authenticate the user. This enables superior liveness detection to combat spoofing attacks, when compared with other fingerprint authentication technologies.

“This is a significant milestone in our partnership with Evolute,” adds Marcus Laurén, Chief Product Officer at NEXT Biometrics. “Our shared commitment to delivering strong and convenient biometric authentication for the Indian market meant our Active Thermal sensors played a key role in helping Evolute meet the security and liveness requirements for Aadhaar L1 certification. We continue to see growing demand in this area and look forward to continuing to support Evolute as it expands its secure, reliable, and user-friendly solutions across India.”

Over the last 25 years, NEXT Biometrics has shipped more than 10 million sensors. Its Active Thermal technologies are certified by entities including Aadhaar, FBI-PIV, MOSIP Compliance and NIBSS, and have been implemented in countries including Bangladesh, China, Ghana, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, U.S. and Vietnam.
