Oslo, Norway – November 22, 2021 - Smartoptics, a leading provider of optical networking solutions has been awarded a multi-year Research and Development grant “SkatteFUNN” from the Norwegian Government for the development of a disaggregated ROADM platform (reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer) for fiberoptic networks.
“We are continuing to innovate in fiberoptic metro, regional and data center networks. Our ROADM solutions are based upon an open architecture, assuring interoperability between several equipment suppliers. The solution will support multipoint-to-multipoint network topologies and will thus work in most network configurations,” says Kent Lidström, CTO at Smartoptics.
The growth in the market segment disaggregated solutions is expected to be around 15% per year over the coming years. The growth is fueled by strong growth in data traffic, driven by for example 5G network roll-outs, internet of things, cloud computing and video streaming.
“Smartoptics is well positioned to benefit strongly from this market growth. Customers choose to build their network with this software defined approach to optimize both CAPEX and OPEX by breaking vendor lock-in and focus on best of breed solutions for each function in the network. Smartoptics has an opportunity to grow fast in this market segment for many years to come and projects have already been won based on this solution”, continues Kent Lidström.
This financial implication of the R&D grant is a cash contribution in the range of USD 600 thousand, of which 60% for 2021 and 40% for 2022.
