Oslo, June 30, 2022 – Wallenius Wilhelmsen (OSE: WAWI) updates its progress on emissions targets. In 2021, the rapid rebound in cargo volumes combined with port congestions caused the need for higher than usual sailing speeds. This resulted in increased fuel consumption and, consequently, a shortfall in meeting the CO2 intensity target for 2021.
In February this year, Wallenius Wilhelmsen published the Sustainability-linked financing framework v1.0. Today, the 2021 progress report is published. The company did not meet its targeted CO2 intensity due to higher vessel speeds as a result of market conditions and supply-chain disruptions. The KPI result was 5.89 gCO2 per GT.nm compared to a target of 5.80.
Torbjørn Wist, CFO at Wallenius Wilhelmsen says: “The emissions shortfall does not impact our commitment to the 2030-target in any way. We remain focused on cutting emissions every day through the initiatives described in the Framework. Further, the 2021 shortfall has no impact on the pricing of the issued sustainability-linked financing.”
The Framework allows Wallenius Wilhelmsen to link financing with its target to reduce fleet weighted average CO2 intensity by 27.5 per cent from 2019 to 2030. The first senior unsecured sustainability-linked bond under the Framework was launched in April.
Overall, in 2021 the industry experienced supply-chain disruptions including pandemic lockdown measures and port congestions. This negatively impacted Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s trade routes and vessel operations. The conditions caused higher fuel consumptions as the vessels had to speed up to make up for delays. These dynamics have continued into 2022 and we are continuously monitoring the development.
