Aus diesem Grunde wird das größte Chemieunternehmen der Welt zum seine Pharma-Aktivitäten an Abbott Laboratories mit Sitz in Abbott Park, Illinois, USA, für 6,9 Milliarden US-Dollar verkaufen. Eine entsprechende Vereinbarung wurde am 14. Dezember 2000 unterzeichnet. Aufsichtsrat und Vorstand der BASF sowie der Board von Abbott haben dem Übereinkommen zugestimmt. Die Vereinbarung umfasst alle deutschen und internationalen Aktivitäten von BASF Pharma und soll nach der Genehmigung durch die Wettbewerbs behörden im ersten Quartal 2001 in Kraft treten. Mit der Veräußerung ihres Pharmageschäfts erweitert die BASF ihren Spielraum zu weiterem Wachstum. Strube: “Profitables Wachstum steht bei der BASF klar im Vordergrund. Der Erlös aus dem Verkauf erlaubt uns, sowohl Investitionen als auch gezielte Akquisitionen durchzuführen, die unsere Kerngeschäfte stärken. Weitere Schwerpunkte sind das laufende und künftige Aktienrückkaufprogramme und das Verringern von Finanzschulden.” Die BASF hat in den zurückliegenden Monaten ihre Arbeitsgebiete Pflanzenschutz und Feinchemie mit großem Einsatz ausgebaut. Dazu zählen der Erwerb des Geschäfts mit Pflanzenschutzmitteln von American Home Products und des Vitamingeschäfts von Takeda. BASF Pharma beschäftigt weltweit rund 10.700 Mitarbeiter, wird im Jahre 2000 einen Umsatz von etwa 2,6 Milliarden Euro erzielen und ist auf den Arbeitsgebieten Stoffwechselerkrankungen (Schilddrüse, krankhaftes Übergewicht), Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen, Immunologie sowie Schmerzbekämpfung tätig. That is why the world’s biggest chemical company is selling its pharmaceuticals operations for $6.9 billion to Abbott Laboratories headquartered in Abbott Park, Illinois, USA. An agreement to this effect was signed on December 14, 2000. The board of executive directors and the supervisory board of BASF and the Board of Directors of Abbott Laboratories have approved the arrangement The agreement covers all German and international operations of BASF Pharma and is subject to approval by regulatory agencies and customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2001. Dr. Jürgen F. Additional major goals are the ongoing and future share buy-back programs and the reduction of financial indebtedness.” During the recent months, BASF has expanded its Crop Protection and Fine Chemicals operations expanded with great speed. Included are the acquisitions of the crop protection business of American Home Products and Takeda’s vitamins business. BASF Pharma employs approximately 10,700 people worldwide and is expected to achieve sales of about 2.6 billion euros in 2000. The unit operates in the fields of metabolic diseases (e.g. thyroid disease, obesity), cardiovascular diseases, immunology and pain therapy.
