Halbjahr ’99: Starkes Wachstum in Kerngeschäftsfeldern Maastricht, 9. August 1999. Rhein Biotech, seit April am Neuen Markt notiert, ist auf Expansionskurs. Die konsequente Umsetzung der Unternehmensstrategie – die Schlüsseltechnologie für die hocheffiziente Produktion von rekombinanten Pharmazeutika zu vermarkten und Produkte auszulizenzieren – führte im 1. Halbjahr 1999 in den entsprechenden Geschäftsbereichen zu starkem Wachstum: Beim Technologie- Transfer verdoppelte sich der Umsatz von 150.000 auf 303.000 Euro. Die Einnahmen aus Lizenzgebühren legten im 1. Halbjahr 1999 sogar um 249 Prozent auf 272.000 Euro zu, und die Pro duktverkäufe von 276.000 auf 350.000 Euro. Gleichzeitig verringerten sich die Erlöse aus Auftragsforschung von 1,04 Millionen Euro auf 732.000 Euro. Die strikte Ausrichtung auf Wachstum erfordert hohe Investitionen seitens des Unternehmens. So steigerte Rhein Biotech im 1. Halbjahr die Ausgaben besonders im Bereich F&E auf 1,28 Millionen Euro (1,06 Millionen im 1. Halbjahr ’98) und beim Marketing und Vertrieb auf 92.000 Euro (32.000 Euro im 1. Halbjahr ’98). Gleichzeitig konnte das Unternehmen dank seiner intensiven Forschungstätigkeit auch drei weitere Patente an melden. Insgesamt verzeichnete Rhein Biotech im 1. Halbjahr 1999 einen Umsatz von 1,66 Millionen Euro (+ 7 %). Da Rhein Biotech bei annähernd gleichem Umsatz stärker investierte als im Vorjahr, ergibt sich insgesamt ein negatives Nettoergebnis von 661.000 Euro (1998: – 472.000 Euro), allerdings 100.000 Euro über Plan. Kooperationen und Beteiligungen Zur Unternehmensstrategie gehören Kooperationen mit starken internationalen Partnern. In den ersten sechs Monaten 1999 setzte Rhein Biotech dies sehr erfolgreich um: – Nach intensiven Verhandlungen im 1. Halbjahr ging das Unternehmen am 4. August eine langfristige Kooperation mit einem Tochterunternehmen der Rhone-Poulenc Gruppe (Instituto Merieux Argentina S.A.) ein. Die ebenfalls argentinische Rhein Biotech-Tochter Rhein Americana wird schrittweise in die Rhone-Poulenc Gruppe eingegliedert. Gleichzeitig erwirbt Instituto Merieux Argentina S.A. eine Lizenz zur Nutzung von Rhein Biotechs Expressionssystem. Neben Vorauszahlungen vereinbarten die Unternehmen langfristige Lizenzgebühren über Verkäufe von Kombinationsimpfstoffen. Mit Rhein Biotechs Schlüsseltechnologie produziert die Rhone-Poulenc- Tochter ein Hepatitis-B-Oberflächen-Antigen als Basis eines neuen Kombinationsimpfstoffes für die internationalen Märkte. Geschätztes Marktpotential: 200 Millionen Dosen pro Jahr. – Außerdem vereinbarte Rhein Biotech eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem belgischen Biotechnologie-Unternehmen Innogenetics. Gemeinsam werden sie Produktionsprozesse für hochwertige Wirkstoffe entwickeln, z.B. für einen therapeutischen Hepatitis-C-Impfstoff. Innogenetics ist an der EASDAQ notiert und beschäftigt rund 550 Mitarbeiter. – Darüber hinaus schloß das Unternehmen eine internationale Kooperation mit dem staatlichen RIVM (The National Institute of Health and the Environment, Niederlande) und dem größten indonesischen Impfstoff-Produzenten BioFarma. Ziel ist es, Rhein Biotechs Hepatitis-B-Wirkstoff einzubringen in eine neue Impfstoff-Kombination, die neben der DTP-Kombination gegen Diphterie, Tetanus und Pertussis (Keuchhusten) auch den Schutz vor Hepatitis-B umfaßt. Der Gesamtmarkt in Südostasien liegt bei 40 Millionen Impfdosen jährlich. Rhein Biotech N.V. 1st Half-Year 1999 Strong Growth in Core Areas Maastricht, 9 August 1999. Rhein Biotech, listed on the Neuer Markt since April is on expansion course. The consistent application of the company’s strategy – to market their key technology for highly efficient production of recombinant pharmaceuticals and to license out products – led to strong growth: Turnover for technology transfer doubled from 150.000 to 303,000 Euro. Income from license fees increased by 249 per cent to 272,000 Euro and product sales rose from 276,000 Euro to 350,000 Euro. Income resulting from contract research went down from 1,04 million Euro to 732,000 euro, in line with strategy. The strong concentration on growth requires substantial investments: Rhein Biotech increased spending in the first half- year on R&D to 1,28 million Euro (1,06 million in the first half of 1998) and on sales and marketing to 92,000 Euro (32,000 Euro in the first half of 1998). Intensive research led to three new patent applications. Overall Rhein Biotech realised 1,66 million Euro sales in the first half of 1999 (+7%). As the company invested more heavily in this half-year with almost the same turnover as in the same period last year, there was a negative net result of 661,000 Euro (1998: – 472,000). This is 100,000 Euro better than planned. Cooperations and Participations Collaborating with strong international partners is part of the company’s strategy. Rhein Biotech applied this strategy successfully in the first half of 1999: – After intensive negotiations during the first half-year, Rhein Biotech concluded a major agreement with a subsidiary of the Rhone Poulenc Group (Instituto Merieux Argentina. S.A.) on August 4th. Rhein Biotech’s Argentinian subsidiary Rhein Americana S.A. will be incorporated gradually into the Rhone Poulenc Group. Simultaneously Instituto Merieux acquires a license to use Rhein Biotech’s expression system. Apart from up-front payments, the companies agreed on long term license fees on sales of combination vaccines. Using Rhein Biotech’s technology, the Rhone Poulenc Argentinian subsidiary will produce hepatitis B surface antigen as the basis for a new combination vaccine for international markets. Estimated market potentials 200 million doses per year. – Rhein Biotech also started a close cooperation with the Belgian biotech company Innogenetics for joint development of production processes for high value active substances for example for a therapeutic hepatitis C vaccine. Innogenetics is listed on the EASDAQ and employees around 550 people. – Additionally Rhein Biotech entered into an international co- operation with the Dutch state owned RIVM (The National Institute of Health and the Environment) and the Indonesian vaccine manufacturer BioFarma to develop a new combination vaccine which involves extending the already existing DTP combination against Diptheria (D), Tetanus (T) and Pertussis whooping cough (P) to include protection against hepatitis B by incorporating Rhein Biotech’s hepatitis B active substance.
