Juli 2000 – Die Rhein Biotech-Gruppe, spezialisiert auf die biotechnologische Produktion von Impfstoffen und Therapeutika, hat mit dem langjährigen Partner Hoffmann-La Roche einen neuen Kooperationsvertrag zur wechselseitigen Nutzung geschützter Technologien abgeschlossen. Durch das Abkommen akquiriert Rhein Biotech über die Laufzeit von 15 Jahren die Nutzungs- rechte an einer zusätzlichen Expressionstechnologie – Aspergillus sojae -, die Rhein Biotechs Möglichkeiten zur Produktion unterschiedlich komplexer Zielproteine entscheidend erweitert. Dr. Alexander Strasser, Vorstand Technik der Rhein Biotech Gruppe: “Strategisches Ziel der Einlizensierung von Aspergillus war es, unsere Technologieführerschaft im Bereich der mikrobiellen Expressionstechnologien über die nächste Dekade hinweg zu sichern. Wir verfügen heute über eine breitgefächterte Technologie-Plattform, von unserer “Weltmeisterin” Hansenula über Aspergillus bis bin zu tierischen und bakteriellen Expressionssystemen. Dadurch sind wir in der Lage, die Ergebnisse der Genomforschung für die Entwicklung wirklich kostengünstiger Medikamente gegen Massenkrankheiten zu nutzen.” Die Hoßmann-La Roche AG erhält im Gegenzug eine nicht-exklusive Nutzungslizenz an Rhein Biotechs patentierter Hansenula-Produktionstechnologie zur Entwicklung und Herstellung von industriellen Enzymen. Die Mannheimer Tochter Roche Diagnostics GmbH erhält durch den Vertrag eine Lizenz zur Nutzung der Hefetechnologie für den Bereich der Diagnostika. Under the agreement Rhein Biotech acquires rights on Aspergillus sojae, an additional expression technology, for a period of 15 years. This significantly extends Rhein Biotech’s options to produce proteins of varying complexity. Dr. Alexander Strasser, Chief Scientific Officer, Rhein Biotech Group: “Our strategic goal in licensing-in Aspergillus was to secure our technological leadership in the area of microbial expression technology over the next decade. We now have a broad technology platform including our “champion” Hansenula, the newly acquired Aspergillus as well as animal and bacterial expression systems. This puts us in a position to use the results of genome research to develop cost effective medicins against mass diseases.” Hoffmann-La Roche acquires non-exclusive rights for the use of Rhein Biotech’s patent protected Hansenula production technology for the development and production of industrial enzymes. The Mannheim based subsidiary Roche Diagnostics acquires a license for the use of the yeast technology for diagnostics under the agreement.
