Diepholz, October 8, 2012 – together with the Technical University in Braunschweig, artec technologies AG (ISIN DE0005209589) will implement a research and development (R&D) project for the development of an acoustic control system for video camera systems. The Federal Ministry for Economy and Technology has already approved an appropriate grant within the framework of the ‘Central Innovation Program for Medium-sized Businesses (ZIM)’.

The objective of this cooperative project is the development of revolutionary sensor technology for integrating automatic directional detection into the control of video-camera tracking systems deployed in the surveillance of open terrain. This will provide for greatly increased security – especially during nighttime hours. The acoustic sensor technology will detect the sources of sounds within a large surveillance area and transmit the directional data to special cameras which are then automatically redirected and zoned in on those sources. At the same time, alarm messages are sent to command centers whose personnel can then evaluate the ensuing live images transmitted by remote video. In a further stage of development, these acoustic sensors will be able to detect certain sound patterns such as graffiti spraying or external influences on vehicles, boxcars, etc. and thus help avoid false alarms.

‘This, our third such R&D project, further demonstrates our high level of innovativeness,’ Thomas Hoffmann, member of artec technologies’ board of directors explains. He points out that such ‘acoustic radar,’ which enables the intelligent detection, localizing, and tracking of sound sources through video technology, even under adverse conditions, is not presently available on the market. ‘The present systems – based as they are primarily upon motion sensors – will be redefined in the future by their supplemental capacity to recognize dominant sources of sound and focus surveillance on those. The results of this research and the know-how gained by that will markedly contribute to a better capacity to meet the demands of the market and society’s need for security. This, in turn, will further strengthen artec technologies’ position in the market place,’ Hoffmann concludes.
