Funkwerk gets first contract for electronic interlocking system in East
Europe

- AlisterCargo to control operations at state-of-the-art marshalling yard
in Slovakia
- Commissioning due in 2011
- Europe-wide increase in demand for electronic interlocking control
systems

Electronic interlocking systems (EIS) are increasingly important for
efficient and safe rail operations. They enable processes to be automated
particularly in shunting to reduce operating costs. AlisterCargo, a
well-engineered system from Funkwerk, is a technological trendsetter in
this area. The specialist in communication, management and information
systems has now received its first contract for an electronic interlocking
system from East Europe. AlisterCargo will in future control the
state-of-the-art marshalling yard in the Slovakian city of in Žilina
Teplička. The system is due to be commissioned in 2011.

Žilina Teplička is one of the key rail hubs in the country. It is here that
Slovakia's main rail line connects the country with such destinations as
Budapest, Prague, Vienna and Kiev. Shunting operations thus are
proportionally frequent. The modernisation of the marshalling yard in the
north of Slovakia hence is a key part of major efforts in the country to
ensure that rail lines and stations are operated more efficiently.

Cost advantages and international references speak for AlisterCargo

That the choice was made for Funkwerk's AlisterCargo solution to control
shunting operations was the result of intensive economic and operational
calculations and analyses of international references. The decisive factor
for the Slovakian supplier of signalling equipment, AŽD Bratislava, as the
client was primarily the compact, modular design of AlisterCargo and the
use of cost-effective standard industrial components. This approach allows
for flexible adjustment to the specific requirements of the marshalling
yard in Žilina Teplička, ensures short execution times, and provides a
modern system with low lifecycle costs. AlisterCargo will be used in Žilina
Teplička for fully automatic route control and as an interlocking system to
ensure safety during shunting operations.

AlisterCargo has proven its practical use on many occasions. Sweden's
network operator Trafikverket, for example, has used the interlocking
system since 1997. Finnish rail operator Finnish Transport Agency FTA
(formerly RHK) and Denmark's state railways, DSB, opted for AlisterCargo as
an intelligent management solution for their depots and marshalling humps.
The EIS is also put into operation by a global leader in iron ore products
for the steel industry and in the million-strong metropolis of Jakarta
(Indonesia).

New market for cost-effective interlocking control systems
AlisterCargo, therefore, will provide AŽD Bratislava with a proven,
economic interlocking system, which combines all shunting-related functions
including the control and monitoring of all route elements (signals,
points, brakes, line clearance notification, etc.) and shunting or gravity
marshalling operations with integrated brake control in a single solution.

Electronic interlocking increasingly opens up a new global market for
cost-effective systems. Funkwerk has already gained a significant share in
the market for interlocking systems. Due to Europe-wide modernisations in
the railway sector, the company expects above-average growth potential here
over the next few years.
