PRESS RELEASE

Post Privacy Masking protects privacy in live video surveillance

– Development of Funkwerk protects the privacy in video transmission

– Combination of protecting the public and requirements of data protection

– First positive experiences by security forces

Kölleda/Fürth, April 28, 2011. It’s the typical dilemma: video surveillance systems are there to help solve or – in the best case scenario – even prevent crime. But they must not violate people’s privacy. Data protection regulations therefore are quite
stringent in the public sphere, and rightly so. Combining both aspects proves difficult in practice and is often impossible. This is where a revolutionary new development from Funkwerk comes in: it combines protection of the general public with protection of privacy. Based on initial experiences, security forces were much impressed with Funkwerk’s innovative solution.

The system PRIMA-S and the software application PRIMA-P from Funkwerk make it possible to mask private zones in live video images. Private properties and places can be hidden or deliberately pixelated. The innovative aspect: post-privacy masking. The masks are user-dependent and can, where necessary, be concealed after the image is taken, making it easer, for example, to investigate crimes. PRIMA-S has been dvised by Funkwerk for analogue video systems. It allows easy, yet effective upgrading of video systems which previously failed to meet the data protection regulations and avoids otherwise necessary deinstallation, while maintaining earlier investments.

PRIMA currently unrivalled

The software application PRIMA-P is a module used to upgrade the functions of aready existing video management systems. Post privacy masking at a user dependent level is made possible only by separately recording and replaying digital video data and masking information controlled by PRIMA-P. Both systems, PRIMA-P and PRIMA-S, can mask video images from static and dynamic cameras depending on the zoom factor. Users can generate up to 1,000 masking polygons per channel and scenario. Objects are reliably concealed irrespective of fast camera movements.

The PRIMA technology from Funkwerk is already used successfully in a city in Nortern Germany, where pan/tilt cameras monitor the municipal area, crossroads and particular hot spots. Funkwerk is breaking with an innovative business solution here with PRIMA, which includes on the basis of competitive advantage is great potential to authorities and security forces
