Funkwerk AG / Key word(s): Contract
PRESS RELEASE Funkwerk receives contract from telecom company KPN Dutch trains to be equipped with state-of-the-art digital train radio systems First ever use of innovative filter to block radio interference
The project, which is scheduled to be completed within a record period of 15 months, requires Funkwerk Traffic & Control Communication in Kölleda/Thuringia to develop, produce, certify and deliver customised systems. The contract further involves the training of service personnel at the railway workshops along with a repair service for 8 years with renewal option. The project will enable Funkwerk AG to extend its lead in the international market for GSM-R train radio systems and demonstrate once more its formidable technological expertise. The devices feature a special innovative filter which is designed to block any radio signals that may interfere with communication in the train. Funkwerk has integrated this new specially designed filter technology into the GSM-R transceiver module “MT5E” and optimised the software to ensure that all parameters meet, if not exceed, the strict requirements of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The module is used in quantity for the first time in this project. “We welcome the Dutch government initiative,” says Kerstin Schreiber, CEO of Funkwerk AG. “It marks the first project worldwide to use these special filters and will give NS Reizigers a leading edge, but also mean that communication in rail transport will become significantly more reliable. Cooperating with the Dutch railway operator and KPN as highly competent partners, we are confident that we will deliver optimum technology, professionalism and service for this innovative project.” For maximum efficiency in replacing the current train radio systems, Funkwerk will combine the central controller, the operating unit and the loudspeakers to provide a compact system that is mechanically adapted to suit the structural environment. The contract will enable the Thuringian company to demonstrate once more its exceptional expertise in the management, development, production and certification process that had been a critical factor in the tender, aside from the blocking function.
