Hamburg/Gescher, 22 August 2006. The photovoltaic system of the waste
management enterprise ”Entsorgungs-Gesellschaft Westmünsterland (EGW)” was
inaugurated by Eckhard Uhlenburg, environment minister of North
Rhine-Westphalia, in Gescher in the district of Borken on 18 August 2006.
With 23,430 modules on a total area of approximately 17,000 square meters
and an investment volume of EUR 5.6 million the new photovoltaic
installation currently is one of the worldwide largest rooftop photovoltaic
installations constructed of thin film modules. These modules are
especially suitable for the application in larger projects, as they are
comparatively low-priced and thus allow for a rather high return on
investment. With a rating of 1.2 million kilowatt hours the installation
meets the power consumption of around 300 four-person households. At the
same time it contributes effectively to the climate protection with a CO2
saving of 857 tons per year or on the average 2,4 tons a day.
After the reception Thomas Holzschneider, director of EGW, welcomed the 60
invited guests, followed by the greetings of Gerd Wiesemann, district
administrator of the district of Borken and member of the supervisory board
of EGW, and Eckhard Uhlenberg, environment minister of North
Rhine-Westphalia. “Considering that the power generation of all the
photovoltaic systems that were installed in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2004
is estimated to amount to 70 million kilowatt hours, the dimension of this
new system with more than 1 million kilowatt hours is really evident”,
Minister Uhlenberg points out in his speech.
Afterwards the guests had the possibility to take a bird’s eye view on the
photovoltaic system from a lifting platform. A tour around the sight gave
an impression of the consequent use of renewable energies by EGW: Besides
the new photovoltaic installation several systems for the usage of biogas
from sewage sludge and of wind energy are already in operation.
Nastro-Umwelttechnik GmbH was in charge of the planning of the construction
and the installation of the photovoltaic system. “We are proud that with
this major project we had the possibility to contribute to this impressive
installation with our experience and our know-how”, says a pleased Mr.
Schulz-Colmant, speaker of the managing board of Reinecke + Pohl Sun Energy
AG.
