Für den Inhalt der Mitteilung ist allein der Emittent verantwortlich. —————————————————————————— Asclepion und ICON beabsichtigen strategische Kooperation FDA-Zulassungsverfahren für den Excimer-Laser MEL 70 G- Scan sollen in ICON-Laser-Zentren in den USA durchgeführt werden Die Asclepion-Meditec AG (WKN: 531370) und ICON LASER EYE CENTERS, Inc. mit Sitz in Toronto, Kanada, haben eine Absichtserklärung unterzeichnet, die in Kürze zu einer strategischen Kooperation führen soll. Diese strategische Kooperation umfasst die Durchführung klinischer Studien im Rahmen der FDA-Zulassung für den Excimer- Laser MEL 70 G-Scan auf dem US-amerikanischen Markt. Weiterhin ist vorgesehen, dass Asclepion Laser des gleichen Typs für ICON-Laser-Zentren in Nord-Amerika, Europa und dem Mittleren Osten liefert. Die klinischen Studien, die im Rahmen des FDA-Zulassungsverfahrens notwendig sind, werden in einigen der erfahrensten ICON-LaserZentren in den USA durchgeführt. Die dafür notwendigen Laser Systeme werden innerhalb der nächsten 40 Tage vor Ort installiert. Beide Seiten vereinbarten, weitere Details nach Abschluss des entsprechenden Vertrages zu veröffentlichen. >>Mit dieser Kooperation erhalten wir Zugang zu dem bedeutenden Segment der Laser-Zentren im Markt für die laserbasierte Behandlung von Fehlsichtigkeiten (laser vision correction),<< sagte Bernhard Seitz, Vorstandsvorsitzender der AsclepionMeditec AG. Er sieht in ICON ein Unternehmen, das in diesem Marktsegment zukünftig stark wachsen wird. Nach erfolgreicher FDA- Zulassung bietet sich für Asclepion bei den US amerikanischen Zentren der ICON-Gruppe zusätzlich ein erhebliches Absatzpotenzial, das aus dem dann anstehenden Austausch älterer Lasertypen - sogenannter Broad-Beam- und SlitScanning-Laser - erwächst. Im Geschäftsjahr 1999/2000 konnte Asclepion in seinem Unternehmensbereich Vision einen Umsatzanstieg von rund 45 % verzeichnen. Asclepion ist mit mehr als einhundert platzierten Einheiten seines TOSCA-Systems (Topography Supported Customized Ablation) Marktführer auf dem Gebiet der individuellen Behandlung von Fehlsichtigkeiten mittels Lasern (customized ablation). Entsprechend des beabsichtigten strategischen Lieferabkommens wird ICON zunächst eine Anzahl von Lasern des Typs MEL 70 GScan für seine Zentren in Nordamerika und Europa erwerben. Weitere Laserkäufe sind im Zuge des Austausches älterer Lasersysteme in bereits bestehenden und in neuen ICON-Zentren geplant. Weltweit betreibt ICON derzeit 43 Laserzentren. Davon befinden sich 28 in den USA, sechs in Kanada und neun - inklusive drei mobiler Zentren - in Europa. This strategic cooperation includes the clinical trials for the FDA-Registration of Asclepion's MEL 70 G-Scan for the US market as well as a strategic supply agreement for excimer lasers to be used in ICON's centers in North America, Europe and the Middle East. The FDA trials will be run in several of ICON's most experienced laser centers in the United states. The lasers required will be installed within the next 40 days. Upon FDA approval the ICON group also represents a significant potential for replacement of older broad beam and slit scanning lasers within their US centers. Asclepion itself has realised growth of about 45 % in its Vision business unit in the past financial year and leads the market in customized ablation with more than one hundred TOSCA (Topography Supported Customized Ablation) installations worldwide. Under the strategic supply agreement, ICON will purchase an initial quantity of MEL 70 G-Scan lasers for use in North America and Europe. Further purchases of lasers are intended as older units will be replaced in ICON's existing centers and new centers will be opened.
