Lenzing AG: The course is set for expanding the Lyocell plant at Heiligenkreuz,
Burgenland
Lenzing AG has decided to build a second production line at the Lyocell location
Heiligenkreuz. The announcement was made on the occasion of the celebrations on
Tuesday, commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Lyocell plant at
Heiligenkreuz. With this investment, amounting to EUR 35 million, Lenzing AG’s
site in the Burgenland region is on its way to becoming the leading Lyocell
location in Europe.
The growing demand for Lyocell fibers recently led to delivery bottlenecks. In
order to be able to meet the additional demand, a second production line will be
built at the Heiligenkreuz location, in order to expand the production capacity
to 40,000 tonnes. WIBAG – Wirtschaftsservice Burgenland AG (Services to
Industry in the Burgenland Region) – and the Federal Province of Burgenland have
already pledged their commitments for promotion funds regarding the investment,
so that the financing of the project is ensured. The additional capacities can
be expected to be taken into operation by the end of 2003.
“The successful preparation of the market and the increase in demand make this
expansion of capacities a meaningful undertaking. It helps the Heiligenkreuz
plant to obtain a structural dimension that will ensure the further upward
development, also on a longer-term basis,” says Dr. Franz Raninger, member of
Lenzing AG’s Board of Management with fiber responsibilities.
Today, exactly five years ago, production began at the Lyocell plant of Lenzing
AG at Heiligenkreuz, after about two years of construction. During the first
semester 2000, the production capacity according to plan (about 15,000 tonnes)
was raised to 20,000 tonnes per year. In December 2000 Lenzing Lyocell was the
first Austrian company to win the ecology award of the European Union in the
category “technology”. The natural raw material for Lyocell fibers is wood,
which is processed into pulp and then into Lyocell, applying a particularly
ecological high-tech production method. Textiles made of Lyocell are
characterized by a high wearing comfort. The main areas of application are the
clothing industry, home textiles, as well as applications in the nonwovens
industry.
