- Follow-up order underlines company’s thin film competence
- Growing thin film business pooled in separate subsidiary
Hohenstein-Ernstthal, 18 March 2008 – Roth & Rau AG has received a
follow-up order to supply four production facilities for the manufacture of
thin film solar cells. Roth & Rau supplied a pilot facility for the
manufacture of so-called CIS solar cells on film to the same client last
year already. 'This strategically important follow-up order will enable us
to build up our competence and position in the rapidly growing thin film
solar market. We see this as confirming the efforts we have made in the
field of thin film technology, efforts which we will be stepping up even
further in future', commented Dr. Dietmar Roth, CEO of Roth & Rau AG.
Roth & Rau’s leading international market position is currently based
mainly on its activities as a provider of antireflective coating facility
and fully automated turnkey production lines for the manufacture of
crystalline silicon solar cells. In its thin film business field, Roth &
Rau has since 2006 also supplied its cooperation partner OC Oerlikon
Balzers AG with the facility platform for the TCO 1200 facility developed
together with Oerlikon. This business has also shown pleasing developments
in the most recent past, leading to high volumes of incoming orders. Roth &
Rau Dünnschicht Solar GmbH, based in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, was founded in
February 2008 already. The company’s activities in its thin film business
field will be pooled at this subsidiary in future. 'With this step, we have
taken account of the increasingly significant role played by thin film
technology in Roth & Rau’s strategy and have at the same time laid a
foundation for potential capacity acquisitions in this field', added
company CFO Carsten Bovenschen.

accounted for around 6 percent of total sales in the financial year 2006,
produces plasma sources and ion beam sources as well as process systems for
thin film and surface technology. Customers served by this division
include, in particular, companies in the semiconductor and automotive
industries, R&D departments in various industries including photovoltaics
as well as research institutes and universities.
